What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines foundational sciences and liberal studies with progressive nursing theory and clinical practice. Early coursework builds anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, lifespan development, and introductory nursing concepts. Core nursing modules typically include health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, adult medical–surgical nursing, maternal–child nursing, paediatric nursing, mental health/psychiatric nursing, and community and public health nursing.

Students also study nursing research and evidence-based practice, leadership and management in nursing, quality and safety, informatics, and health policy. Practical learning is provided through structured clinical placements across acute care, community health, long-term care and specialised services, supported by simulation laboratory sessions and interprofessional team projects. Many programmes also include a capstone or practicum project that integrates clinical decision-making, research appraisal and leadership skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet general Michigan Technological University admission standards and complete prerequisite college- or high-school-level coursework in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and English. Typical preparation includes human anatomy and physiology, general chemistry, microbiology (or equivalent), and composition; some programmes ask for statistics or developmental psychology as well.

Selection into the nursing sequence is usually competitive and may require a separate nursing programme application. Requirements for progression into clinical courses commonly include a minimum GPA in prerequisite courses, background checks, health screening and immunisations, current CPR certification, and demonstration of essential skills for nursing practice. Graduates of the pre-licensure pathway are eligible to sit the national licensing examination for registered nurses, subject to meeting state board requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for entry-level registered nurse roles in hospitals, community health agencies, long-term care, home health, mental health services and public health departments. With experience, BSN-prepared nurses commonly move into specialised clinical positions (such as critical care, emergency, oncology or neonatal nursing), leadership and managerial roles, case management, infection control, quality improvement, education, and clinical research coordination.

A BSN also provides the academic foundation for graduate study (MSN, nurse practitioner programmes, clinical nurse specialist tracks, nurse administration or doctoral research degrees), enabling advanced clinical practice, academic careers, leadership and research positions.
