What you'll study

The programme combines foundational courses in American government, comparative politics, international relations and political theory with practical training in research methods and public policy analysis. Students take core modules such as Introduction to American Politics, Comparative Political Systems, Political Theory, Public Policy, Constitutional Law, and Research Methods in Political Science. Quantitative and qualitative skills are developed through courses in statistics for the social sciences and field methods.

Beyond core requirements, students choose from electives that reflect faculty expertise and contemporary issues—options frequently include Campaigns and Elections, Local and State Government, Human Rights, Political Economy, Environmental Policy, and Media and Politics. The degree culminates in a capstone seminar or senior thesis that emphasises independent research, critical writing and presentation skills.

Practical learning is emphasised: internships with local and state government offices, non-profit organisations, advocacy groups and media outlets form a key part of student experience. Study abroad, community-engaged learning projects and opportunities to work with faculty on research provide additional hands-on preparation.

Entry requirements

• Completion of a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong achievement in humanities and social-science subjects.
• Personal statement explaining interest in political science and career or academic goals.
• Academic references or school reports that comment on academic readiness and written communication skills.
• Some experience in extracurricular activities, community service, debate, student government or similar civic engagement is desirable.
• Standardised tests may be considered where submitted; many applicants are admitted on the basis of academic record and qualifications alone. Mature students and transfers are assessed on prior post-secondary performance and relevant experience.
• International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements through recognised tests or prior study in English.
