What you'll study

The civil engineering degree combines foundational mathematics and science with specialised engineering subjects and practical laboratory work. In the early years you study calculus, differential equations, physics, chemistry, engineering graphics and computer-aided design, together with introductory engineering problem-solving and materials science. Progressing into upper-level study, modules typically cover statics and dynamics, mechanics of materials, structural analysis and design (concrete and steel), geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, transportation engineering, environmental and water resources engineering, construction management and surveying.

The programme emphasises hands-on learning: laboratory courses, materials testing, field surveying exercises, CAD and modelling projects, and a multi-semester senior capstone design project that integrates technical design, cost estimating, specifications and professional communication. Internships or cooperative placements with engineering firms, municipal agencies or contractors are strongly encouraged to provide practical experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate competence in mathematics and science. Typical requirements include a high school diploma or recognised equivalent with completed courses in algebra, geometry, precalculus or calculus, and physics; chemistry is preferred. Universities and colleges may consider applicants on the basis of GPA, academic transcripts, and supporting materials such as personal statements, letters of recommendation or résumés. Standardised test scores (SAT/ACT) may be requested or considered depending on institutional admissions policy.
