What you'll study

The programme emphasises advanced studio practice, critical theory and professional presentation. Core work typically combines sustained studio courses in one or two primary media (such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, drawing, digital/new media and installation) with seminars in contemporary art theory, history and criticism. Students engage in regular critiques, structured technical workshops, and elective courses that allow experimentation across other disciplines.

Students are expected to complete a substantial independent project or thesis exhibition as the culmination of their studies, supported by directed research, curatorial practice and written components. Entry requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, typically with a background in studio art, art history or a related creative field.
• A professional portfolio of recent work demonstrating technical skill, conceptual development and readiness for graduate-level study. The portfolio format and size requirements are provided by the department.
• A written artist statement or statement of purpose outlining research interests, artistic influences and goals for graduate study.
• Academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
• References, usually two or three letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees familiar with the applicant’s creative work and potential.
• An interview or on-campus/virtual review may be part of the final selection process for shortlisted applicants.
