What you'll study

The programme blends the Department of Philosophy's core curriculum with courses in Chinese philosophy, history and language. You will take foundational philosophy modules such as Introduction to Philosophy, Logic, Ethics, Epistemology and History of Western Philosophy to build analytical and critical thinking skills. Chinese-focused work typically includes survey courses on Classical Chinese thought, Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhist philosophy, close readings of canonical texts, and comparative courses that bring Chinese and Western traditions into dialogue.

Language study is an important component: undergraduate courses in Mandarin Chinese progress from beginning through intermediate and advanced levels, emphasising reading of original texts, translation skills and cultural context. Electives allow you to explore related disciplines — for example Chinese history, literature, religion, art history and contemporary Chinese society — and to pursue a senior seminar or capstone project that integrates philosophical analysis with area studies research.
