What you'll study

The programme focuses on applied clinical nutrition and the management of nutrition-related disease across the lifespan. Core topics typically include medical nutrition therapy, advanced human nutrition and metabolism, nutritional biochemistry, nutrition assessment and diagnosis, clinical pharmacology as it relates to nutrition, enteral and parenteral nutrition, and specialised clinical topics such as renal, oncology and critical care nutrition.

Coursework is complemented by training in counselling and behaviour change techniques, nutrition communication, ethics and interprofessional practice. Students also study research methods and statistics to support evidence-based practice and may complete a capstone project, practicum portfolio or thesis depending on the chosen pathway.

Supervised experiential learning is a major component: clinical practicum rotations in hospitals and outpatient clinics, community nutrition placements and opportunities in long-term care and specialised units allow students to apply assessment, care planning and outcome evaluation skills under preceptor supervision.

Entry requirements

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, typically in nutrition, dietetics or a closely related biological or health science. Applicants with degrees in other fields may be considered if they have completed prerequisite coursework.
• Prerequisite courses commonly include human nutrition, introductory and advanced biology, chemistry (including organic or biochemistry), physiology, and statistics. Exact prerequisites should be confirmed with the programme.
• A competitive undergraduate GPA; many applicants present evidence of strong academic performance in science and nutrition courses.
• Application materials usually include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose outlining professional goals, and a CV or résumé. Some applicants may be asked to attend an interview.
• Because supervised practice includes placements in clinical settings, applicants must be able to complete background checks, immunisations and any required health clearances; additional certifications (for example, basic life support) may be expected before clinical rotations.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for clinical dietitian roles in hospitals, ambulatory care, outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities and community health services. Many take positions as clinical nutrition specialists, renal dietitians, oncology dietitians or critical care nutritionists. Other career pathways include public health nutrition, case management, nutrition support teams, and roles in healthcare administration.

With further credentialing and experience, graduates may move into leadership, education, research or industry roles such as clinical educator, programme director, clinical research coordinator or nutrition consultant.
