What you'll study

The MA Sociology is a predominantly taught programme that combines core sociological theory, advanced research methods and options that allow you to specialise in substantive areas. Teaching typically includes a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops, with assessment through essays, research reports, presentations and a final dissertation or major research project.

• Core theory and debates: classical and contemporary sociological theory, debates about modernity, globalisation, social change and critique.
• Research methods: systematic training in both quantitative and qualitative methods, including survey design, statistical analysis, ethnography, interview techniques and mixed-methods approaches.
• Advanced methods options: specialised modules covering advanced statistics, social network analysis, digital methods, or longitudinal and comparative methods (availability varies by year).
• Substantive options: modules on social inequalities (class, race, gender), migration and transnationalism, work and organisations, families and intimate life, urban sociology, culture, media and consumption, and sociology of health and education.
• Dissertation: an independent research project supervised by academic staff, allowing you to apply theoretical and methodological skills to a substantive research question.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in sociology or a related social science discipline. Equivalent qualifications from recognised international institutions are accepted. Applicants with substantial relevant professional experience or appropriate prior learning may also be considered.

All applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved test or other evidence. Admissions decisions are based on the quality of your academic record, references, and a personal statement outlining your interests and suitability for the programme.
