What you'll study

This programme blends technical engineering knowledge with sustainability, humanitarian practice and social science to equip you to design and deliver appropriate solutions for communities affected by disasters, conflict or chronic development challenges. Teaching typically combines lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies and applied group work, concluding with an individual research or project dissertation that can be practice-based or research-led.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK honours degree at 2:1 level or its international equivalent in engineering, environmental science, geography, development studies, or a related discipline. Candidates with a 2:2 plus substantial relevant professional experience in humanitarian practice, development or engineering may also be considered.

• Demonstrable quantitative or technical skills are expected for engineering-rich parts of the programme; applicants from social-science backgrounds should highlight any relevant technical experience or quantitative training.
• Relevant professional experience—such as work with NGOs, government agencies, emergency response organisations or engineering roles in development contexts—can strengthen an application.
• All applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements; typical offers reference recognised tests such as IELTS with a satisfactory overall score and minimum component scores.
