What you'll study

This MA combines study of contemporary theory with applied professional practice. The programme typically covers core themes such as professional learning and development, curriculum and pedagogical design, leadership and change in education, and research methods for practitioners. You will complete taught modules that develop critical understanding of education policy and practice, alongside an independently supervised research project or professional enquiry grounded in your workplace.

• Professional Learning and Development: theories of teacher learning, continuing professional development, and models for reflective practice.
• Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment: curriculum design, inclusive pedagogies, formative and summative assessment practices.
• Leadership, Management and Policy: leadership approaches, managing change, accountability and the impact of policy on professional practice.
• Research Methods for Practitioners: qualitative and quantitative approaches, ethical practice, and translating research into practice.
• Professional Enquiry / Dissertation: a sustained piece of independent work that applies research methods to a question arising from professional practice.

The programme is offered with flexible study modes to accommodate working professionals, including part-time options. Teaching combines seminars, workshops, peer learning, and supervised research supervision; assessment typically includes essays, professional portfolios, case studies, presentations and the final research project.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a recognised undergraduate degree (ordinarily a 2:1 or equivalent) in a related subject or a professional qualification together with relevant professional experience in education or a learning-related profession. Applicants without a traditional degree but with substantial and demonstrable professional experience or prior learning in education may also be considered.

Selection is based on academic achievement, a personal statement outlining professional aims and relevant experience, and usually one or more references from employers or academic referees. International applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English to the level required by the university.
