What you'll study

The programme combines core academic modules with extensive supervised clinical practice. You will study human communication and swallowing across the lifespan, including the anatomy and physiology of the speech, voice and swallowing mechanisms; typical and atypical language and communication development; and the assessment and management of paediatric and adult communication disorders.

• Core clinical topics: assessment and intervention for language disorders, articulation and phonological disorders, motor speech disorders, fluency (stuttering), voice disorders and dysphagia (swallowing disorders).
• Supporting sciences: anatomy and neuroanatomy relevant to communication, audiology basics, cognitive-communication disorders and principles of learning and development.
• Clinical skills and practice: clinical assessment techniques, therapy planning, evidence-based intervention, multidisciplinary working and clinical governance.
• Research and professional practice: research methods and statistics, a supervised research project or dissertation, ethics, professional issues and service delivery models.
• Clinical placements: multiple blocks of supervised clinical practicum in settings such as public hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special schools and community services, with progressive responsibility and competency assessment.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally require a recognised bachelor’s degree. Candidates with a degree in speech and hearing sciences, allied health professions, education, psychology or related disciplines are preferred. Applicants with other academic backgrounds may be considered if they can demonstrate relevant experience and prior learning in areas related to communication disorders and meet prerequisite requirements.

• References and a personal statement outlining professional motivation and relevant experience.
• Shortlisted applicants may be invited to attend an interview to assess suitability for clinical training.
