What you'll study

The BMedSc(Hons) is centred on an original, supervised research project in a biomedical or clinical topic and complemented by advanced coursework. Research areas commonly available include molecular and cellular biology, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, immunology, pathology, public health and clinical research. Your programme typically comprises a major research thesis plus a selection of taught papers that deepen theoretical knowledge and research skills, such as experimental design, biostatistics, research ethics, and specialist seminars relevant to your chosen field.

• Research thesis: an independent, supervised research project producing a substantial written report and often laboratory or clinical data collection.
• Advanced coursework: taught papers that provide advanced knowledge and methods training in your subject area.
• Research skills: training in experimental design, data analysis, scientific communication and ethics.

Entry requirements

Admission to the honours programme normally requires completion of a relevant three- or four-year bachelor’s degree or the University of Auckland Bachelor of Medical Science, with a strong academic record in courses related to the proposed area of research. Applicants are expected to demonstrate research aptitude and preparation through prior coursework and, where possible, supervised project experience.

• Academic record: a competitive GPA or honours-grade equivalent in your prior degree, especially in courses relevant to medical and biomedical sciences.
• Research supervision: you will normally need to secure a proposed supervisor within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences or demonstrate that suitable supervision can be arranged.
• Application materials: a programme application that may include a research proposal or statement of research interests, academic transcripts, and references.
• Other requirements: depending on the project, you may need to meet laboratory safety and ethics clearances or provide evidence of relevant practical skills.

Graduates of the BMedSc(Hons) are well placed to pursue research careers, further postgraduate study (for example a PhD) or professional clinical and health roles.
