What you'll study

The BFA is a practice-led programme that combines sustained studio work with critical and historical study. Across the degree you will undertake core studio courses in areas such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, time-based media and interdisciplinary practice, alongside drawing and material studies. Programmes typically include modules in art history and theory, contemporary critical practice, curatorial studies and professional practice, and you will have opportunities to take electives from related disciplines.

Studio learning emphasises experimentation, technical development and conceptual rigour. Assessment is portfolio-based and includes individual and group critiques, exhibitions and written research. Students progressively build an independent body of work, culminating in larger-scale exhibition projects and professional preparation for presenting work publicly or applying for postgraduate study.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to meet the University of Auckland's general admission criteria for undergraduate study, which includes secondary school qualifications or recognised equivalents. In addition to academic entry, admission to the BFA requires submission of a creative portfolio that demonstrates artistic potential and commitment, and applicants may be invited to an interview or provide a written statement outlining their practice and interests.

International applicants must show evidence of English language proficiency where required and submit a portfolio in line with the School's guidance. Graduates of the BFA follow diverse career paths across the visual arts and creative sectors. Typical destinations include working as independent artists, exhibiting nationally and internationally; roles within galleries, museums and art centres such as curatorial work, collections management and gallery administration; positions in arts organisations and cultural policy; and creative industries roles including illustration, design, photography and media production.

Many graduates also pursue further study at honours, masters or postgraduate levels to specialise in practice, research or curatorial studies, and the degree provides skills applicable to education, community arts, creative entrepreneurship and arts management.
