What you'll study

The Honours year combines taught coursework with a substantial supervised research project. Taught components focus on advanced research methods, evidence-based practice, health policy and leadership in nursing. Typical modules include research design and statistics for health sciences, qualitative and quantitative methods, critical appraisal of evidence, advanced practice and professional issues in nursing.

• Research project (major component) – an independent, supervised research dissertation or equivalent scholarly project that demonstrates competence in research design, data collection, analysis and academic writing.
• Research methods and statistics – advanced instruction in quantitative and qualitative approaches relevant to nursing and health service research.
• Evidence-based practice – translating research into clinical decision-making and quality improvement.
• Leadership and professional development – topics such as health policy, clinical governance, ethics and workforce issues.
• Optional seminars or electives – may cover areas such as public health, Māori and Pacific health, ageing and long‑term conditions, or education and assessment in clinical practice.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and close supervision for the research project. Assessment typically includes written assignments, presentations, research reports and the dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent professional nursing qualification) and be registered (or eligible for registration) with the relevant national nursing regulatory authority. Admission is competitive and based on academic merit; applicants usually need a strong academic record from their prior degree.

• Evidence of an appropriate nursing qualification and registration eligibility.
• A record of academic achievement in the bachelor degree; selection often considers final-year grades and overall GPA.
• Applicants may be asked to submit a curriculum vitae, academic transcript, references and a brief research outline or statement of intent.
• International applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements.

Graduates of the Honours year are well placed to pursue a range of career paths in clinical practice, research and health leadership. Common directions include roles as clinical nurse specialists, nurse educators, quality and safety or clinical governance officers, and policy or management positions within health services.

The programme is also a pathway to further postgraduate study (Master’s by research or PhD) and can strengthen applications for funded research roles, academic positions and advanced practice fellowships.
