The MPP combines core training in policy analysis and public management with specialist options reflecting New Zealand and global policy challenges. Core topics typically include policy theory and institutions, microeconomic and fiscal perspectives for policy, quantitative methods and data analysis for policy evaluation, and qualitative approaches to policy research. Students can expect coursework on policy design, programme evaluation, public sector governance, and ethics in public policy.

Electives allow you to specialise in areas such as health policy, education policy, environmental and climate policy, social policy, housing and urban policy, or Māori and Indigenous policy and governance. The programme emphasises practical skills: preparing policy briefs, running impact evaluations, using administrative and survey data, and developing stakeholder engagement strategies.
