What you'll study

This programme builds a strong foundation in microeconomics and macroeconomics, supported by mathematical and statistical tools needed for empirical analysis. Early years typically focus on core subjects such as mathematical methods for economists, introductory econometrics, microeconomic theory and macroeconomic theory. As you progress, you study modules in applied econometrics, game theory, public economics, international trade and finance, and development and labour economics.

In the later stage of the degree you choose from a range of optional modules that reflect current research and professional areas, for example behavioural economics, environmental and resource economics, financial economics, industrial organisation and health economics. The final year commonly includes a substantial independent project or dissertation, allowing you to pursue specialised research under academic supervision. There are also opportunities to undertake a placement year in industry or a year of study abroad, depending on the pathway you select.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong numeracy and analytical ability. Typical offers require strong A-level (or equivalent) performance with mathematics normally among the required subjects. The programme also accepts a broad range of international qualifications and invites applicants with relevant access or foundation qualifications.

Applicants without formal qualifications in mathematics may still be considered if they can show evidence of quantitative ability from other study, work or tests. All applicants should provide a personal statement outlining their interest in economics and any relevant experience. Those whose first language is not English will need to meet the University's English language requirements.
