What you'll study

This four-year integrated MEng combines the fundamentals of chemical engineering with specialist modules in environmental engineering and sustainability. In the early years you build a strong grounding in transport phenomena, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering and process control. Later years introduce environmental topics such as waste and wastewater engineering, air pollution control, environmental systems modelling, process design for sustainability, life cycle assessment and resource recovery technologies.

The course places strong emphasis on practical and design skills. Typical learning activities include laboratory work, pilot plant experimentation, computer modelling, process simulation, individual and group design projects, and research-led seminars. The industrial year gives an extended placement in a company or public body where you apply engineering skills to real-world problems and build professional experience.

Assessment is through examinations, coursework, laboratory reports, design projects and a substantial individual or group MEng project in the final year, which often addresses an environmental challenge such as emissions abatement, circular economy solutions or energy-efficient process intensification.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and applicants are expected to demonstrate strong attainment in relevant prior study. Typical routes include strong A‑level or equivalent qualifications with Mathematics and a science subject (for example Chemistry or Physics). The programme also accepts a range of other UK and international qualifications, including BTECs, T‑levels and recognised international diplomas; applicants with vocational qualifications will normally need to show substantial numerical and scientific content.

Applicants who already hold a degree in an appropriate discipline may be considered for advanced standing or direct entry to an advanced year; such applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree (for example equivalent to a UK 2:1) in chemical engineering, chemical sciences, or a closely related engineering or science subject.

All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English to the University’s required standard. Admissions decisions also take into account personal statements, references and any relevant work or project experience.
