What you'll study

This integrated master’s programme builds progressively from foundational topics to advanced, research-led material. Early years cover core areas such as inorganic, organic and physical chemistry alongside analytical techniques, practical laboratory skills and mathematics for chemists. As you progress you will study advanced modules in areas such as spectroscopy and structure determination, kinetics and reaction mechanisms, computational and theoretical chemistry, materials and polymer chemistry, and sustainable/green chemistry.

The programme places strong emphasis on laboratory competence: practical classes and project work develop synthesis, analytical and instrumental skills (NMR, mass spectrometry, chromatography, X-ray crystallography and other techniques). In the final stages you undertake substantial independent research — typically a dissertation or research project supervised by academic staff — that demonstrates your ability to design experiments, analyse data and present scientific conclusions.

The Year Abroad component usually takes place between taught stages and involves study or research at one of the department’s international partner universities or with an approved industrial research group. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to work in a different research environment, gain language and intercultural experience, and return with enhanced independence and technical skills that feed into your final-year project.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a strong background in chemistry and the quantitative skills required for degree-level study. Typical UK applicants will be expected to have A-level (or equivalent) qualifications including Chemistry and usually Mathematics; many applicants also present a second science or Mathematics at A-level. The department also considers international qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate; applicants holding equivalent high-level secondary qualifications should show strong performance in chemistry and numerate subjects.
