What you'll study

The BA (Hons) Architecture is a studio-led course that mixes design projects with technical and theoretical modules. In early years you will learn fundamental design skills, drawing and modelmaking, digital representation, architectural history and basic construction principles. As you progress you will tackle larger, more complex design briefs that require integrated knowledge of structure, environmental performance, building technology, regulations and accessibility.

Typical module themes include:

• Design Studios: iterative architectural projects that develop concept, spatial thinking, technical detailing and presentation across a range of scales and contexts.
• Architectural Technology and Construction: materials, construction methods, structural principles and how technical performance is coordinated with design intent.
• Digital Tools and Representation: CAD/BIM workflows, 3D modelling, parametric design fundamentals and digital fabrication techniques.
• History and Theory: study of architectural movements, urbanism, conservation and critical debates that inform contemporary practice.
• Environmental Design and Sustainability: passive and active design strategies, daylighting, thermal comfort, energy performance and sustainable urbanism.
• Professional Studies: practice management, legal and regulatory frameworks, health and safety, and preparation for placement or work experience.

The programme typically includes a substantial final-year design project (a dissertation-equivalent studio project) and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, site visits, workshops and competitions. Teaching is delivered through a combination of studio tuition, lectures, seminars, technical workshops and one-to-one crits.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a combination of academic ability and creative potential. Typical academic offers are in line with mainstream UK undergraduate requirements (for example, A-levels at a level commonly sought by architecture programmes) or the international equivalent. Applicants will be asked to submit a portfolio of creative work and may be invited to an interview.

• Portfolio: a curated selection of creative work showing drawing, modelmaking, design thinking or other visual/creative practice. Quality of thought and process is valued as much as finished outcomes.
• Interview: either in-person or online to discuss your portfolio, motivations and suitability for the course.
• English language: evidence of English proficiency is required for applicants whose first language is not English; the university publishes acceptable qualifications and minimum levels.
• Other qualifications: equivalent vocational qualifications and mature student routes are considered; relevant work experience or evidence of commitment to architecture can strengthen an application.

Career prospects

Graduates of the BA (Hons) Architecture typically follow routes into architectural practice, entering the profession at the stage equivalent to RIBA/ARB Part 1 (or equivalent in other jurisdictions). Common first roles include architectural assistant positions in practice, technical or design roles in consultancies, or positions in related fields such as urban design, project management, building surveying and digital design/fabrication studios.

Many students continue to postgraduate study to complete professional Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications, or to specialise in areas such as sustainable design, conservation, architectural history, digital design/BIM or urban regeneration. The programme also provides transferable skills valued across industries, including design thinking, visual communication, project coordination and technical literacy.
