What you'll study

The Honours year combines taught seminars with an independent research project. You will deepen your understanding of advanced social work theory, evidence‑based practice and research methods while engaging critically with contemporary issues such as social policy, social justice, kaupapa Māori approaches and multicultural practice.

• Research methods and design – advanced qualitative and quantitative methods, ethics and translating research into practice.
• Advanced practice and clinical approaches – assessment frameworks, intervention models, working with families and complex case formulation.
• Policy analysis and advocacy – critical appraisal of social policy, welfare systems and advocacy strategies.
• Kaupapa Māori and indigenous perspectives – theory and practice that support culturally responsive and bicultural social work.
• Honours dissertation or major research project – an independent, supervised research study that contributes to knowledge in a chosen area of social work.

The programme is typically delivered through small seminar classes, research supervision and independent study. Assessment usually combines essays, case analyses, research assignments and the honours thesis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised professional social work qualification (for example a Bachelor of Social Work) or an equivalent degree with social work accreditation and a demonstrated record of professional practice. Admission requires a strong academic record from prior tertiary study and evidence of readiness for honours‑level research.

Selection commonly also considers professional experience, a curriculum vitae, academic references and a statement of intent outlining research interests. Because social work is a practice‑facing profession, offers of place may be conditional on police vetting, a health declaration and any placement suitability checks.

Career prospects

An Honours year prepares graduates for a range of pathways. Many use the qualification to:

• progress into postgraduate study such as a Master’s by coursework or research or eventually doctoral study;
• move into research, policy or analysis roles within government agencies, NGOs and think tanks;
• access advanced or specialist practice roles in health, mental health, child protection, corrections and iwi or community social services;
• pursue roles in supervision, programme evaluation, training and advocacy.

While professional registration as a social worker in New Zealand is generally based on completion of an approved social work qualification, an honours year strengthens research capability and can enhance competitiveness for senior or specialist positions.
