What you'll study

This honours-level surveying programme combines theoretical and applied subjects across geodesy, cadastral surveying, spatial information science and surveying practice. You will study core topics such as land law and cadastral systems, positional measurement with GNSS and total stations, geodetic datums and coordinate systems, error theory and adjustment computation, photogrammetry and remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and engineering and construction surveying.

• Fieldwork and practical laboratories: multi-day field camps, rover and baseline GNSS measurement, precise levelling, traversing and control surveys using modern instrumentation.
• Spatial technologies: LiDAR data handling, UAV/drone surveying, digital photogrammetry and spatial data processing and visualisation in GIS environments.
• Professional practice: cadastral boundary definition and plans, surveying ethics, health and safety in field surveying, project management and reporting.
• Honours research/project: an advanced independent project or dissertation applying surveying methods or spatial analysis to a practical or research question, supported by supervision.

Entry requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Surveying with Honours normally requires University Entrance (or an approved equivalent) plus strong achievement in mathematics. Applicants are expected to have NCEA Level 3 calculus or a similar standard of mathematics; physics or another science subject is recommended. International applicants should present an equivalent secondary qualification (for example A‑levels or the International Baccalaureate) with comparable mathematics preparation.

For students entering the honours year specifically, entry is via satisfactory completion of the relevant bachelor-level surveying or spatial science degree with a required grade point average or class of degree as set by the School. Selection may also consider demonstrated field skills and suitability for professional practice.

• Cadastral or cadastral‑licenced surveyor (following required supervised practice and professional assessment)
