What you'll study

This programme combines sport management, sustainability science and business practice to explore how sport organisations can reduce environmental impact, improve social value and operate responsibly. Teaching covers theory and practical application, with an emphasis on measurement, strategy and leadership.

• Core modules: sustainable sport strategy and governance; environmental management in sport (carbon, energy and resource use); social value, inclusion and community impact; sustainable event planning and legacy; corporate responsibility and ethical commercial practice in sport.
• Business skills: stakeholder engagement and communication; sustainable supply chain and procurement; green marketing and sponsorship; finance for sustainability and impact measurement.
• Research and project work: applied consultancy projects with real sport organisations, and an independent dissertation or major applied project that allows you to investigate a sustainability challenge in depth.
• Learning methods: lectures, case studies, workshops, guest lectures from practitioners, site visits to venues and events where possible, group consultancy simulations and one-to-one supervision for project work.

Entry requirements

Typical entry is a good second-class honours degree (2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as sport management, business, environmental science, engineering, geography or a related subject. Applicants with a lower-class undergraduate degree plus substantial relevant professional experience in sport, events, sustainability or corporate responsibility may also be considered.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be asked to demonstrate proficiency through an approved English language test at a level typically expected for postgraduate study (for example IELTS or equivalent). Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview or asked to provide a statement of purpose and references outlining their interest and experience in sustainable sport practice.

Typical career paths include sustainability officer or manager for clubs, venues or governing bodies; sustainability and legacy roles within major event organisations; CSR or partnerships roles in commercial sport organisations; sustainability consultancy for sport and leisure clients; policy and advocacy roles in NGOs and charities; and sustainability-focused roles in public sector bodies that work with sport.

The programme also provides a strong foundation for further research or doctoral study in areas such as sport policy, environmental management and social impact in sport.
