What you'll study

The programme combines core modules on climate governance and policy analysis with options that let you focus on areas such as mitigation and adaptation, climate justice, and the politics of low‑carbon transitions. Typical topics include the science-policy interface for climate decision-making, international climate diplomacy and agreements, governance and institutional analysis, climate finance and market mechanisms, and policy instruments and evaluation.

Research methods and quantitative/qualitative skills modules prepare you to design and carry out policy-relevant research. The degree normally culminates in an independent dissertation or applied policy project, where you investigate a substantive question in depth and develop evidence-based recommendations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to hold a UK upper second-class (2:1) honours degree, or an international equivalent, in a relevant discipline such as politics, international relations, environmental studies, geography, development studies, economics, law or a related social science. Candidates with a lower second-class degree and substantial relevant work experience may also be considered.

Admissions also take into account prior study of quantitative or qualitative research methods, and a demonstrated interest in policy or governance. International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements for postgraduate study; typical offers require a recognised English qualification at a level suitable for taught master's programmes.
