What you'll study

This programme combines close readings of contemporary literary texts with interdisciplinary approaches to culture, media and society. You will study contemporary literary theory, major developments in recent fiction and poetry, and the relationship between literature and cultural practices such as film, digital media and performance.

• Core modules: advanced contemporary literary theory; research methods and critical practice; dissertation or major research project.
• Typical optional modules: contemporary fiction and narrative; contemporary poetry; postcolonial and transnational literature; genre and form (crime, speculative, autofiction); literature and the media; digital culture and new media; gender, sexuality and culture; publishing studies; creative-critical practice.
• Project work: the degree culminates in an extended dissertation or practice-based project supervised by research-active staff. Projects allow you to pursue specialised topics, develop archival or field research methods, or produce creative-critical outputs.
• Teaching and assessment: teaching typically combines seminars, workshops and one-to-one supervision. Assessment is by essays, presentations, portfolios or projects and the final dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in English, literature, cultural studies, or a closely related subject. Candidates with a 2:1 (or international equivalent) are typically competitive; applicants with a lower classification but significant relevant experience or a strong academic profile may also be considered.

Applications should include academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining research interests, and at least one academic reference. Some pathways may request a writing sample or evidence of creative practice. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English in line with the university's standard postgraduate requirements.
