What you'll study

This programme blends microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods with the technical and reporting aspects of accounting. You will build a foundation in economic theory and econometrics while learning financial and management accounting, corporate finance and the skills needed to interpret and communicate financial information.

Typical structure

• Year 1: Introductory modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics; introductory statistics and mathematics for economists; foundations of financial accounting and bookkeeping; introductory management accounting; academic skills and study methods.
• Year 2: Intermediate micro- and macroeconomics; intermediate econometrics and applied data analysis; financial accounting and reporting; management accounting and costing; modules in corporate finance and business law relevant to accounting.
• Year 3: Advanced elective modules such as advanced econometrics, financial markets, taxation, auditing, corporate reporting and accounting information systems; a research project or dissertation applying economic and accounting techniques; optional topics in behavioural economics, development economics or business strategy.

Teaching typically combines lectures and small-group seminars, with practical computer-based sessions for data analysis and accounting software. Assessment is usually a mix of exams, coursework, projects and a final-year dissertation or applied research project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong quantitative background. Typical entry asks for good passes in three A-levels (or equivalent), usually including Mathematics or a numerate subject at a satisfactory grade. Relevant qualifications such as BTEC, International Baccalaureate or recognised international school-leaving certificates are accepted; mature students and those with work experience are considered on an individual basis.

In addition to academic grades, applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language proficiency requirements. Admissions tutors may also look for evidence of numeracy, analytical ability and an interest in economics and accounting through personal statements and references.

Career prospects

Graduates are well placed for careers in accounting, finance and business. Typical roles include trainee accountant, management accountant, financial analyst, tax adviser, auditor, economic researcher and graduate positions in consultancy, banking and the public sector. Many students go on to take professional accounting qualifications (for example ACCA, ACA, CIMA) or postgraduate study in economics, finance or accounting to specialise further.
