What you'll study

The programme builds an engineering foundation in the first year, developing core topics such as mathematics, mechanics, electronics and materials, before moving into specialist biomedical content. Typical modules cover biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation and sensors, medical imaging principles, physiological measurement and signal processing, and systems modelling. Laboratory classes and project work are emphasised throughout, including hands-on experience with sensors, prototype development, CAD and experimental testing.

Progression into later years increases focus on interdisciplinary applications: design of medical devices, rehabilitation engineering, tissue engineering introduction, biocompatibility and regulatory aspects relevant to healthcare technology. A significant individual or team project in the final year allows you to apply engineering methods to a real biomedical problem, often using the department's laboratories and, where appropriate, collaborating with clinical partners or industry.

The course structure typically mixes lectures, practical laboratory sessions, small-group tutorials and project supervision. Assessment methods include coursework, lab reports, design portfolios, exams and the final-year engineering project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have A-levels, BTEC, or an equivalent qualification with competencies in mathematics and at least one science (biology, chemistry or physics). Typical offers in previous admissions cycles have required strong performance in maths plus a science subject. Mature students and applicants with vocational qualifications are considered on an individual basis; relevant practical or work experience in engineering or healthcare is valued.

International applicants should hold an equivalent secondary-school qualification and meet the University's English language requirements. Admissions decisions take account of predicted and attained grades, personal statement, and references; applicants may also be invited for interview or an admissions assessment in some cases.
