What you'll study

This three-year honours degree combines academic study with substantial clinical practice to develop competence in image acquisition, radiation safety and patient-centred care. Core teaching covers human anatomy and physiology, imaging physics and technology, radiographic positioning and technique, image evaluation and imaging pathology, radiation protection and quality assurance, and professional practice and ethics.

Practical learning is delivered through simulated skills sessions in university clinical skills facilities and assessed clinical placements with local NHS partners. You will also study research methods and evidence-based practice and complete a final-year research project or clinical portfolio. Optional or advanced modules typically introduce specialised modalities such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy and interventional imaging, as well as professional development topics such as leadership and advanced clinical practice.

The programme is designed to meet professional competency standards: teaching includes workplace-based assessments, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), reflective practice and assessment of clinical competence across a range of patient groups and hospital settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a strong science background from A-levels, Scottish Highers or equivalent Level 3 qualifications, with one science subject such as biology or physics recommended. Typical offers also expect evidence of competency in numeracy and literacy. Relevant vocational qualifications and prior healthcare experience are considered, and mature applicants are welcome.

All offers are conditional on satisfactory occupational health screening, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and demonstration of fitness to practise. Applicants should be prepared to attend an interview or selection activity and to provide evidence of relevant observational or hands-on experience where requested. International applicants should meet the university's English language requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and may enter practice as diagnostic radiographers in NHS and private healthcare settings. Typical early career roles include general diagnostic radiography within emergency, inpatient and outpatient services and specialised roles in CT, MRI, plain film, fluoroscopy and trauma imaging.

With experience and further training, graduates can progress to advanced practitioner roles, reporting radiographer positions, sonography (with additional training), educator or research posts, and managerial or clinical leadership roles. Other career paths include work in imaging equipment industry roles, clinical sales and applications, and postgraduate study including MSc programmes in medical imaging, advanced clinical practice or related health sciences.
