What you'll study

This programme builds a broad computer science core in the first year before introducing specialist cyber security topics in later years. Typical themes include programming, data structures and algorithms, computer systems and architecture, databases, operating systems and networking. Cyber security-specific modules cover cryptography, secure software engineering, network security, intrusion detection, ethical hacking and digital forensics. Teaching combines lectures, practical laboratory classes, programming projects and assessed coursework; many modules include hands-on laboratory work using industry-standard tools and simulated attack/defence scenarios.

The degree is modular and staged across three levels: foundational topics in the first year, intermediate and applied subjects in the second year, and advanced, research-led and project work in the final year. Final-year students usually complete an independent individual project on a cyber security topic, supervised by an academic member of staff. Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong school-leaving profile with qualifications in relevant subjects. Successful applicants normally have A-levels (or equivalent) including Mathematics or a strong quantitative subject; other acceptable qualifications include BTECs, Access to HE diplomas and international qualifications such as the IB. Relevant prior computing experience or programming ability is advantageous. The University considers mature students and applicants from diverse educational backgrounds; admissions tutors will also consider relevant experience and personal statements.
