The Bachelor of Science builds core knowledge in the natural and physical sciences while allowing you to concentrate on particular subject areas. Early study typically covers foundational subjects such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and introductory statistics, laboratory technique and scientific communication. As you progress you choose a major or combination of majors from fields such as ecology and environmental science, molecular biology and biotechnology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and statistics, earth sciences, computing and data science, or food science.
The degree structure is flexible: you can follow a broad general BSc or focus on one or more majors. Practical experience is emphasised through laboratory classes, field trips, computing assignments and group research projects.
Admission to the Bachelor of Science requires university entrance via New Zealand secondary school qualification, an equivalent international qualification (such as the IB diploma) or successful completion of recognised tertiary study. Applicants typically need certified achievement in relevant secondary-level science and mathematics subjects. Specific programmes or majors may require particular prerequisite units—eg, biology and chemistry for biomedical or biotechnology pathways, or mathematics for physics and data science majors.
For applicants whose first language is not English, Massey requires an approved English language qualification or test score. Because of the degree’s quantitative and analytical emphasis, graduates are also well placed for careers in emerging areas such as data science, bioinformatics, science communication, and policy advisory roles where scientific literacy is valued.
