What you'll study

The programme integrates nursing theory, health sciences and professional practice to build the knowledge and skills required for safe, competent nursing. Core study areas include human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment and clinical decision-making. Nursing-specific modules typically cover adult nursing, maternal and child health, mental health nursing, kaupapa Māori and Pacific health, long-term and aged care, public and community health, and health promotion.

Research methods, evidence-based practice and quality improvement are included to develop the ability to evaluate and apply best practice. Communication, ethical practice, legal frameworks, leadership and interprofessional teamwork are woven through the curriculum.

Clinical learning is a major component: students undertake multiple supervised placements in hospitals, primary care, community services and other health settings. Simulation-based learning and skills laboratories reinforce practical competencies before and alongside clinical placements.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need to meet New Zealand University Entrance requirements or an equivalent secondary qualification from overseas. Universities commonly expect competence in English and typically prefer background study in a relevant science subject (for example biology or chemistry), although exact prerequisites can vary.

Mature applicants with relevant work experience or previous tertiary study may be considered through alternative admission pathways. All applicants must meet health and safety requirements for clinical placements, which may include immunisation, police vetting, and fitness to practise checks. International applicants should check immigration and registration implications for practising in New Zealand.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand to become registered nurses and work in a wide range of clinical contexts. Common first jobs include roles in medical-surgical wards, emergency departments, primary health teams, aged care facilities, and mental health services. Over time nurses move into specialist clinical roles, nurse education, clinical leadership, management, research, public health and policy positions.

The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study such as post-registration certificates, postgraduate diplomas and master’s programmes in specialist nursing fields, health leadership, public health or research.
