What you'll study

This diploma covers the core knowledge and practical skills needed to run and maintain facilities safely, efficiently and sustainably. You study subjects across four interrelated areas: building and asset management, health and safety and risk, operations and maintenance planning, and people and contract management.

• Building and asset fundamentals — asset lifecycle, basic building services (electrical, mechanical, plumbing), inspections and preventive maintenance planning.
• Facilities operations — day-to-day operations, space management, cleaning and grounds maintenance, utility management and sustainability practices to reduce energy and water use.
• Health, safety and compliance — workplace health and safety principles, emergency preparedness, statutory compliance and managing contractors to meet regulatory requirements.
• Procurement and contract management — tendering, supplier selection, service-level agreements and performance monitoring for outsourced services.
• Business and people skills — communication, basic financial literacy for facilities budgets, record keeping and teamwork for frontline supervisors.
• Practical and applied learning — site-based projects, case studies and workplace-relevant assessments that develop hands-on skills in inspection, reporting and maintenance scheduling.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a secondary school qualification or equivalent relevant workplace experience. Mature learners with several years of experience in trades, building operations, cleaning services or related roles are often considered through recognition of prior learning.

• Minimum literacy and numeracy competency at a secondary-school level or demonstrated equivalent experience.
• For international applicants, evidence of English language proficiency at the level specified by Massey University for diploma study.
• Some programmes may require a police check or immunisation evidence where workplace practicums involve vulnerable people or health settings.
