What you'll study

The programme delivers core environmental health knowledge and applied skills across risk assessment, environmental science, public health law and practice. Teaching combines theory, laboratory and field techniques, practical case studies and a workplace-based component or capstone project.

• Environmental Health Fundamentals – concepts of environmental determinants of health, epidemiology basics and population health principles.
• Environmental Science and Monitoring – air and water quality, noise and housing assessments, sampling techniques and interpretation of environmental data.
• Food Hygiene and Safety – food law and control frameworks, HACCP principles, foodborne disease prevention and inspection practices.
• Communicable Disease Control – outbreak investigation, surveillance systems, control measures and community health protection.
• Environmental Health Law and Enforcement – statutory frameworks, inspection powers, enforcement processes and the legal context for environmental health practice.
• Workplace and Occupational Health – workplace hazard identification, occupational exposure assessment, prevention and control strategies.
• Risk Assessment and Management – quantitative and qualitative risk assessment methods, risk communication and emergency preparedness.
• Research Methods and Professional Practice – project planning, data analysis, report writing, ethics and professional accountability. Many students complete a practical placement or applied project with a local authority, industry or iwi organisation.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally require a recognised bachelors degree in a relevant discipline (for example science, health, environmental studies or engineering) or equivalent tertiary qualification. Demonstrable background in biological or physical sciences, chemistry or statistics is advantageous. Applicants without a directly relevant degree but with substantial professional experience in public or environmental health may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Domestic and international applicants must meet Masseys academic and English language requirements for postgraduate study. Where specific technical knowledge is lacking, applicants may be asked to complete prerequisite or bridging courses before full entry to the diploma.

Graduates are equipped for roles in local and regional government, private consultancy and industry, non-government organisations and iwi/Maori health providers. Typical positions include:

The Graduate Diploma also provides a pathway to further study at masters level for those interested in research or senior technical and policy roles.
