What you'll study

This programme provides a focused selection of postgraduate-level nursing papers that deepen clinical decision-making, advanced health assessment and management, and the application of evidence to practice. Typical study areas include advanced physical and mental health assessment, pharmacology and medication management in primary care, health promotion and chronic condition management, health policy and quality improvement, cultural safety (including Te Tiriti o Waitangi and hauora Māori frameworks), and community and rural nursing practice.

Learning is delivered through a mix of taught papers and workplace-based clinical components. Students can expect a combination of online learning, block workshops or simulation sessions, case-based learning, and assessed clinical practice in an appropriate health setting under the supervision of an approved clinical preceptor.

Entry requirements

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (or equivalent registration in another jurisdiction) is required.
• A recognised bachelor-level nursing qualification (or equivalent) or evidence of prior learning at undergraduate level.
• Evidence of recent clinical practice (employers commonly require at least one year of practice since registration; entry is considered on a case-by-case basis).
• Support from an employer or placement provider for the clinical practice component, including access to an appropriate clinical environment and an approved clinical supervisor.
• Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet Massey’s English language proficiency requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates use this qualification to consolidate and formalise advanced skills for existing roles or to prepare for new responsibilities. Common career pathways include practice nurse or advanced practice roles in primary health organisations, community or public health nursing, rural and remote nursing, long-term condition management and chronic care coordination, occupational health nursing, and roles in clinical education or quality improvement within health services. The certificate also provides a stepping-stone to further postgraduate study, such as a Postgraduate Diploma or Master’s in Nursing or Health Sciences.
