What you'll study

This programme combines practical and theoretical training in social research methods with a clear focus on educational settings. You will study core topics such as research design, qualitative methods (e.g. interviews, ethnography, case studies), quantitative methods (e.g. survey design, basic inferential statistics) and mixed-methods approaches. Modules explore issues of research ethics, data management, measurement and validity, and the translation of evidence into policy and practice.

The course typically includes a combination of taught modules and a substantial independently conducted research project or dissertation that enables you to apply methods to an original question in educational social research. Teaching methods include seminars, workshops, hands-on data sessions, and supervised research placements or collaborations with schools, local authorities or third-sector partners where available.

Structure

The programme is structured around taught modules that build core methodological competence, followed by a major research dissertation. Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in education, a social science or another relevant discipline. Applicants with substantial professional experience in education, research or policy may also be considered, particularly where experience demonstrates research potential. You will also need to demonstrate competence in academic English through recognised qualifications or equivalent evidence of language proficiency if your first language is not English.

Selection typically takes account of academic transcripts, references, a personal statement outlining research interests and career aims, and where relevant a CV detailing professional experience.
