What you'll study

This programme places the design studio at its core, combining intensive project work with taught modules that explore technology, theory and professional contexts. You will develop a major design project that allows for speculative, context-responsive and research-led approaches to architecture, supported by seminars and tutorials.

• Design Studio: A sequence of studio modules across the year where you define, test and deliver a substantial architectural design project. Studios emphasise iterative design, drawing and model-making, critical review and presentation skills.
• Design Development and Technologies: Integrated teaching on construction, detailing, materials, building performance and environmental design to ensure proposals are technically informed and buildable.
• Digital Tools and Fabrication: Use of digital modelling, parametric design, BIM workflows and digital fabrication techniques to explore new forms and delivery methods.
• Theory and Context: Seminar modules on architectural history, contemporary theory, urbanism and cultural contexts that situate your design work within wider intellectual debates.
• Research Methods and Dissertation/Project Report: Training in research methods appropriate to design-led enquiry, leading to a written dissertation or a major project report that supports and documents the design outcome.
• Professional and Entrepreneurial Skills: Sessions on professional practice, project management, procurement and an international perspective on regulation and practice models.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree (2:1 or international equivalent) in architecture, architectural technology, or a closely related design or built environment subject. Applicants without a directly related degree but with relevant professional experience may be considered.

• Portfolio: A portfolio of design work demonstrating creative ability, graphic and model-making skills, and evidence of independent design thinking is required.
• Supporting documents: Curriculum vitae and academic references are normally required as part of the application.
• English language: International applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the School's English language requirements (typical evidence accepted includes recognised tests such as IELTS or equivalent; check the School for current thresholds).
