What you'll study

This master's combines core topics in risk analysis, safety management and human factors with applied methods for controlling hazards in industry. Teaching typically covers quantitative and qualitative risk assessment techniques, reliability and loss prevention, systems thinking and accident investigation, safety culture and organisational behaviour, fire and process safety, legal and regulatory frameworks, and methods for monitoring and auditing performance.

The programme usually comprises taught modules delivered over one year full-time (with part-time and flexible study options frequently available). Assessment approaches include examinations, coursework and practical exercises, and a substantial independent research project or dissertation that applies taught methods to a real-world safety or risk problem.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK honours degree (or an international equivalent) in engineering, science, technology, or a related discipline. Candidates with a lower second-class degree (2:2) may be considered if they have relevant professional experience in safety, risk or a related field. Mature applicants with substantial workplace experience and professional qualifications are also welcome to apply.

All applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate competence in English through an accepted qualification or test. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to provide a personal statement outlining their reasons for study and relevant experience.
