What you'll study

The Bachelor of Nursing blends core biomedical and behavioural sciences with nursing theory, clinical skills and professional practice. Early years focus on foundations such as anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, communication, and the principles of NZ health delivery. As you progress you study mental health nursing, kaupapa Māori and cultural safety, public and community health, care of older people, acute and long‑term care, and leadership in nursing practice.

Teaching methods include lectures, small‑group tutorials, simulation laboratory sessions and supervised clinical placements in hospitals and community settings across the Waikato region. The programme emphasises evidence‑based practice, critical thinking, ethical decision making and safe clinical skills. Students also complete reflective assessments and portfolios that support transition to professional practice.

Clinical experience is a major component and is progressively introduced across the degree, giving hands‑on experience in a range of settings such as medical and surgical wards, emergency, primary care, mental health services, maternity and aged care.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet the University of Waikato’s general entry requirements for undergraduate study and the specific admission criteria for the nursing programme. Typical requirements include a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent tertiary study, with a background in science or health-related subjects recommended.

Because nursing is a regulated health profession, successful applicants must also satisfy non‑academic conditions before clinical placement, which commonly include health screening and immunisation requirements, police vetting, and demonstration of fitness to practise. International applicants need to meet the university’s English language requirements and provide evidence of equivalent academic preparation; they should also ensure they meet any professional registration language standards required by the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing Council and to work as Registered Nurses in hospitals, primary care, aged care, mental health services and community health organisations. Common early career roles include medical‑surgical nursing, community nursing, aged residential care, and mental health nursing.

With experience and further study nurses can specialise in areas such as critical care, midwifery, paediatrics, nurse prescribing, public health, nurse education, management and research. Graduates also move into roles in health policy, quality improvement, clinical coordination and interprofessional teams; postgraduate study (PGDip, Master’s) opens pathways into advanced practice and leadership.
