What you'll study

This programme combines core biological science with specialist modules that emphasise the human context. Across the course you will study cell and molecular biology, human physiology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and immunology, together with modules in pharmacology, neuroscience and disease biology. Teaching balances lectures and seminars with extensive laboratory practicals, computing and statistics for life sciences, and transferable skills such as scientific communication and experimental design.

Typical year-by-year structure includes foundational modules in year one to establish core concepts and laboratory competence, progression to more specialised human bioscience options in year two, and a substantial research project or dissertation in year three where you design and conduct an independent investigation. An optional professional placement year or research placement may be available for students wishing to gain experience in industry, clinical laboratories or research groups.

Assessment methods include written exams, practical reports, coursework, group projects, presentations and the final honours project. You will also develop laboratory techniques commonly used in biomedical research such as cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology methods, and data analysis using statistical and bioinformatics tools.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong science background at school or college. Typical offers ask for good grades in science subjects, with biology and/or chemistry strongly preferred. Acceptable qualifications commonly include A-levels, BTEC National qualifications, or an International Baccalaureate, with specific grade requirements set by the admissions team.

Successful applicants should demonstrate practical experience and an interest in human biology; this may be evidenced by school laboratory work, work experience, voluntary roles or relevant extracurricular activities.
