What you'll study

The programme builds from core biological principles to specialised zoological topics across three years (with an option for sandwich-year placement where available). Year 1 typically covers foundational subjects such as cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology and evolution, quantitative skills and laboratory practicals to establish essential experimental techniques.

In later years you choose zoology-focused modules that commonly include animal physiology, animal behaviour and ethology, population ecology, conservation biology, and biodiversity. Practical fieldwork and data collection form a substantial component: students learn survey methods, habitat assessment, animal handling and ethical considerations for working with wild and captive animals. Molecular and laboratory techniques (e.g. PCR, microscopy, histology) are also integrated so you gain both organismal and molecular perspectives.

The degree culminates in an independent research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff, allowing you to design and carry out original research using laboratory or field approaches. Applicants are expected to have a strong background in science. Typical offers normally require A-levels (or equivalent) including at least one science subject such as Biology; acceptable alternatives include relevant BTEC qualifications or the International Baccalaureate. Admissions tutors also consider personal statements, references and evidence of practical experience with animals or fieldwork when available.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English through an accepted qualification or test. There are also GCSE (or equivalent) expectations for Mathematics and English at standard pass levels.
