See the degree grade →The BSc Astrophysics at Swansea University is a three-year undergraduate degree that teaches the core physics fundamentals together with observational, computational and theoretical astrophysics. It is suited to students who enjoy mathematics and physics and who want to pursue careers in research, the space and satellite sector, data-driven industries or further postgraduate study in astronomy and physics.
This programme builds a strong foundation in classical and modern physics in year one before introducing specialist astrophysics topics in later years. Teaching combines lectures, small-group tutorials, laboratory practicals and computing classes.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong background in mathematics and physics. Typical entrants will hold A‑level (or equivalent) qualifications including Mathematics and Physics, or an IB diploma with appropriate higher-level science and mathematics components. Other Level 3 qualifications (such as Scottish Highers, BTEC or international equivalents) are considered where they demonstrate adequate preparation in mathematics and physical science.
Successful applicants usually also show strong numeracy and problem-solving skills, and may be asked to provide a personal statement and references outlining their interest in astrophysics. If English is not your first language, an approved English language qualification is required.
Graduates from an astrophysics degree follow a wide range of career paths. Many continue to postgraduate study (MSc, MPhil or PhD) in astrophysics, cosmology or related areas of physics. Others enter roles where analytical, numerical and programming skills are valued, such as data science, software development, financial analytics, and engineering.
