What you'll study

The Graduate Entry MB BCh is an integrated four-year programme that compresses core medical science and clinical training into an accelerated pathway. Early stages emphasise systems-based learning (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, nervous system, musculoskeletal, endocrine and reproductive systems), applied clinical anatomy and physiology, and the foundations of clinical practice including communication, clinical reasoning and professional behaviour.

As you progress you will undertake clinical skills training in simulated and real clinical environments, learn acute and emergency medicine approaches, pharmacology and therapeutics, and evidence-based practice. Later years are dominated by clinical placements across primary, secondary and community care settings where workplace-based assessments, case-based learning and multidisciplinary team working are central.

Typical assessment methods include written examinations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), clinical workplace-based assessments (e.g. Mini-CEX, CBD), reflective portfolios and team-based practical assessments. You will also engage with topics such as medical ethics and law, safeguarding, public health and long-term condition management.

Entry requirements

Applicants must already hold an undergraduate degree. Swansea typically expects a strong honours degree in a relevant discipline; exact grade requirements are published by the university and can vary depending on the applicant pool. Graduates from biological or biomedical science subjects are commonly represented, but applicants from other degree backgrounds with demonstrable preparation for clinical study are considered.

All applicants need to sit the recognised graduate admissions test used by the school for selection; performance in this test is considered alongside academic record, personal statement and references. Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview, which assesses communication, ethical reasoning, motivation for medicine and suitability for the profession.

Successful applicants must meet professional and statutory requirements including occupational health clearance, an enhanced criminal records check (DBS) and any English language requirements for international students. Relevant healthcare or volunteer experience is strongly recommended and can strengthen an application, but there is no prescriptive number of hours required.

Career prospects

Graduates are awarded the MB BCh qualifying degree and are eligible to apply for provisional registration with the relevant medical regulator pending completion of required foundation or internship training in their jurisdiction. Most graduates enter the foundation programme (or equivalent) and then choose a specialty pathway such as general practice, internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics or anaesthetics.

Beyond clinical practice, former students pursue careers in medical research, public health, medical education, health management and policy. The degree provides a foundation for postgraduate clinical training, specialist training programmes and opportunities for academic or research fellowships.
