What you'll study

The programme combines core International Relations theory with substantive modules on security, diplomacy, global governance, human rights and international political economy. You will study ideas and methods used to analyse international affairs, such as realist, liberal and critical approaches, and develop skills in research design, comparative analysis and policy assessment.

• Core themes: international relations theory, research methods, global governance and contemporary security challenges.
• Typical substantive modules: diplomacy and foreign policy, international security, global political economy, human rights and humanitarianism, regional studies (e.g. Europe, Middle East, Asia), conflict and peacebuilding.
• Skills development: academic writing, quantitative and qualitative research methods, policy brief writing, critical thinking and oral presentation.
• Work experience and international options: there are usually opportunities to take an industrial/placements year or to study abroad with partner universities to gain practical experience and international exposure.
• Project work: the degree typically culminates in a substantial independent research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff.

Entry requirements

Swansea welcomes applicants with A-levels, Scottish Highers, International Baccalaureate, BTEC and a wide range of international qualifications. Typical applicants hold strong grades in humanities or social science subjects, though there is no compulsory A-level subject for entry. Mature students and those with relevant work experience are considered.

• Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English; UK and international English qualifications are accepted in line with university regulations.
• Personal statements should show an interest in global affairs, analytical ability and an awareness of contemporary international issues.
• Selection may take into account references and, where relevant, an interview or written assessment.
