What you'll study

The programme combines core sociology with modules in criminology and social policy. In the first year you will build foundations in sociological theory, introduction to criminology, and research methods, alongside modules that explore inequality, family, and community. In the second year you study intermediary and contemporary topics such as social theory, quantitative and qualitative research skills, deviance and social control, and policy analysis.

In the final year you choose from a range of specialist options and complete an independent research project or dissertation. Typical optional topics include policing and policing policy, youth justice, punishment and penology, welfare and social policy, health and society, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, and applied research methods. Fieldwork, case studies and opportunities for community-based learning are embedded in many modules, and there is scope to undertake a placement or work-related learning depending on availability.

Entry requirements

• Academic: Applicants are expected to have completed secondary-level qualifications equivalent to UK A-levels or an appropriate higher secondary diploma. The programme accepts a range of UK and international qualifications; applicants with vocational qualifications (for example BTEC) and Access to HE diplomas are considered.
• Subjects: There is no mandatory subject at A-level, but evidence of study in a social science, humanities or evidence of strong written and analytical ability is advantageous.
• English language: If English is not your first language you will normally need to provide an approved English language qualification at a level appropriate for undergraduate study.
• Other: Admissions also consider personal statements, references and any relevant work or voluntary experience in the criminal justice or social care sectors. Mature applicants and those with professional experience are encouraged to apply.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to careers across the public, private and third sectors. Common destinations include roles in probation and youth offending services, policing support and crime reduction teams, local government policy and social care, research and data analysis for charities and NGOs, community development and advocacy, and offender rehabilitation services. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study (MA/MSc and PhD) in sociology, criminology, social policy or related disciplines to specialise further.

The degree develops transferable skills employers value: applied research (qualitative and quantitative), report writing, critical thinking, presentation and casework-relevant knowledge of policy and practice.
