What you'll study

The programme blends cultural analysis of the United States with core political studies to give a rounded understanding of American society, governance and global influence. You will study foundations in American history, literature and film alongside modules on US politics, comparative political institutions, public policy and US foreign relations.

• Year 1 / introductory level — core modules introduce American cultural forms (literature, film, popular culture), basic US political institutions (Congress, presidency, federalism) and academic skills in critical thinking and research.
• Year 2 / development — students take more focused modules such as race and ethnicity in the United States, gender and sexuality, media and communication, political behaviour and public policy. Research methods training prepares students for independent study.
• Final year — a substantial dissertation or extended research project on an approved topic in American studies or politics is combined with optional specialised modules (for example US foreign policy, electoral politics, visual culture, or the politics of law and civil rights).
• Optional experiences — you may have the opportunity to take a placement, short-term study abroad or work-related learning module depending on availability and module choices.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a school-leaving qualification appropriate for undergraduate entry in the UK such as A-levels, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers or equivalent international qualifications. Typical offers fall within the standard undergraduate range for the university; equivalent vocational qualifications or Access to HE diplomas are considered. Mature applicants and those with relevant work experience are welcome.
