What you'll study

The MPhil is principally a thesis-based research degree in which you will design, conduct and present an original research project under the guidance of academic supervisors. The programme focuses on developing research design, critical analysis, scholarly writing and subject-specific methodological skills. While the degree is not coursework-led, students usually undertake research training modules or workshops in research methods, ethics, data analysis and scholarly communication provided by AUT Research Training.

Research topics reflect AUT's strengths and cover fields across its faculties, including business and management, health sciences, communication and design, engineering and computer and mathematical sciences, as well as kaupapa Māori and Pacific research. You will work with one or more supervisors to refine your research question, collect and analyse data using appropriate qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods, and write a substantial thesis presenting findings and situating them in the literature.

Entry requirements

• A completed bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) or a relevant postgraduate qualification with a significant research component is normally required. Applicants without an honours degree may be considered if they can demonstrate equivalent research experience or qualifications.
• Evidence of academic ability to undertake independent research, typically shown through a transcript, research proposal, writing sample and references.
• A formal research proposal and identification of potential supervisors is usually required as part of the application. Applicants should contact potential supervisors in their preferred faculty before applying.
• English language proficiency at a level satisfactory to the university for postgraduate research degrees is required for applicants whose prior study was not in English.
• Selection also takes into account the availability of supervisory expertise and research resources; meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission.

Graduates of the MPhil go on to a range of research- and evidence-focused careers. Many use the degree as a stepping stone to PhD study and academic careers, while others move into research roles in industry, government agencies, healthcare, policy and consulting. The research skills developed—critical thinking, project management, advanced data analysis and written communication—are highly valued in roles such as research analyst, policy advisor, evaluation specialist, R&D associate, and knowledge transfer or innovation positions in the private and non-profit sectors.
