What you'll study

This programme brings together core ideas from criminology and sociology. You will study criminological theories of crime and punishment alongside sociological perspectives on class, gender, race, and institutions. Typical early modules introduce key concepts and research methods, such as Introduction to Criminology, Foundations of Sociology, and Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods.

In your second year you can expect modules that apply theory to areas such as policing and security, youth justice, deviance and social control, and the sociology of punishment. Optional modules often include topics like Gender, Crime and Justice; Globalisation and Crime; Communities and Social Policy; and Substance Use and Crime.

In the final year you will take advanced modules in criminological theory and sociological debates, and complete a substantial independent project or dissertation drawing on primary or secondary research. Many students also have the opportunity to take a placement year or undertake an applied research project with a partner organisation, deepening practical experience in statutory and voluntary sectors.

Entry requirements

Entry is on the basis of standard UK qualifications and equivalent international qualifications. Typical offers are at academic A-level or equivalent vocational qualifications. The programme accepts a range of qualifications including A-levels, BTEC, Access to HE Diplomas and recognised international school-leaving certificates. Applicants should normally have GCSE-level English and mathematics (or equivalent) at a grade considered acceptable by the University.

We also welcome mature students and those with relevant work or voluntary experience in community, youth or criminal justice settings. Admissions decisions take into account personal statements, references and, where applicable, interview or admissions tests.

Career prospects

Graduates from Criminology and Sociology pursue careers across the criminal justice and social sectors. Typical roles include policing and law enforcement support, probation and offender management, youth justice practitioner roles, community work, victim and witness support services, and frontline roles in charities and NGOs.

The combination of analytical, research and communication skills developed on the degree also leads to employment in policy and research organisations, local and national government, social research consultancies, and victim support or rehabilitation services. Many graduates progress to postgraduate study in criminology, sociology, social work or criminal justice to specialise further or to meet professional registration requirements.
