What you'll study

This MSc provides an integrated programme of taught modules and an independent research project that together develop detailed knowledge of human structure, function and their clinical applications. Teaching combines traditional dissection and prosection, three-dimensional imaging, simulation and case-based learning to link anatomy with clinical practice.

• Core anatomical sciences — detailed regional and systemic modules covering musculoskeletal, neuroanatomy, cardiovascular, respiratory and visceral anatomy with emphasis on clinically relevant relationships.
• Applied/surgical anatomy — practical sessions and seminars that focus on operative approaches, surgical landmarks, variations and complications, informed by cadaveric dissection and prosection.
• Imaging anatomy — cross-sectional anatomy and interpretation of common clinical imaging modalities (CT, MRI, ultrasound) to correlate gross anatomy with radiology.
• Research methods and statistics — training in study design, quantitative and qualitative methods, data analysis and critical appraisal to prepare for the dissertation stage.
• Educational practice in anatomy — principles and practice of teaching anatomy, curriculum design, assessment of clinical competence and use of technology-enhanced learning.
• Dissertation / independent research project — an extended piece of laboratory-, clinic- or literature-based research, supervised by academic staff and grounded in contemporary clinical or anatomical questions.

Modules are delivered through a mix of practical laboratory sessions, seminars, small-group tutorials and supervised research. Assessment typically includes practical examinations, written assignments, presentations and the dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject such as medicine, dentistry, biomedical science, anatomy, physiology, nursing, physiotherapy or another life science. Experienced healthcare professionals without a conventional degree but with substantial relevant clinical experience may be considered on an individual basis. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English to meet the University’s postgraduate entry standards.
