Immersive Design in Extended Realities MA

Offered at University of Hull, UK
DegreeMasters
FieldDesign/Media

The Immersive Design in Extended Realities MA at the University of Hull trains designers and media practitioners to create interactive experiences across virtual, augmented and mixed reality platforms. It suits graduates and professionals who want to combine creative practice, technical skills and critical research to produce immersive installations, applications and location-based experiences for cultural, commercial and research settings.

What you'll study

This MA covers the creative, technical and theoretical skills needed to design and produce immersive experiences for virtual, augmented and mixed reality platforms. Teaching mixes practical studio work, technical workshops and critical seminars to prepare you for end-to-end project delivery.

  • Core project-led modules — practice-based projects that guide you from concept through to prototype and evaluation, culminating in a substantial independent major project or portfolio.
  • Interaction & spatial design — principles of spatial storytelling, embodied interaction, wayfinding and choreography of people within physical and virtual spaces.
  • Real-time development & 3D production — working with game engines and real-time tools, 3D modelling, optimisation, animation, lighting and shader techniques for immersive environments.
  • Audio, haptics & sensory design — sound design for immersion, tactile feedback strategies and multisensory approaches to deepen presence and user engagement.
  • UX research & evaluation — methods for user testing in XR, accessibility assessment, ethical considerations and inclusive design practice.
  • Technical pipelines & systems — prototyping with AR toolkits, VR headsets, spatial mapping, motion capture and integration with physical computing and sensor systems.
  • Context, critique & professional practice — cultural theory, histories of immersive media, business models, intellectual property and pitching to stakeholders.

Teaching methods include studio briefs, workshops on hardware and software, group collaborations with students from allied disciplines, industry-led masterclasses and supervised research for the final project. Assessment is typically by project deliverables, reflective documentation and viva or exhibition of work.

Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to hold a UK upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in design, media, computer science, fine art, architecture, animation, game design or a related subject. Candidates with a lower-class honours degree plus relevant professional experience, or a recognised equivalent qualification, are considered. You will normally be asked to submit a portfolio demonstrating creative practice and technical ability, together with a personal statement outlining your interests and goals in immersive design.

International applicants whose first language is not English will be required to meet the University’s English language requirements. Where appropriate, applicants may be invited to an interview or skills audit (in person or online).
