What you'll study

This programme combines core theoretical approaches to international politics with applied modules on security, diplomacy and global political economy. Typical modules include:

• Theories and Approaches in International Relations – critical engagement with realist, liberal, constructivist and critical perspectives and their application to contemporary events.
• Global Security and Conflict – analysis of interstate conflict, terrorism, insurgency, peacebuilding and the shifting character of security in the 21st century.
• International Political Economy – study of trade, finance, development and the political drivers of global economic governance.
• Foreign Policy Analysis and Diplomacy – examination of how states formulate foreign policy, the role of diplomacy and non-state actors in international affairs.
• Research Methods for Politics – training in qualitative and quantitative methods, research design, ethics and data handling to prepare you for a sustained piece of independent research.
• Major Research Project / Dissertation – an extended independent research project supervised by an academic member of staff, allowing you to specialise in a topic of your choice.

Optional modules may allow further specialisation in areas such as human rights, migration, regional politics, security technologies or contemporary political thought. The course is taught through seminars, lectures, workshops and one-to-one supervision for the dissertation. Assessment typically combines essays, policy briefs, presentations, research reports and the final dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in politics, international relations, a social science or a related discipline. A UK upper second-class honours (2:1) or international equivalent is commonly required; candidates with a lower second-class degree (2:2) and relevant professional experience may also be considered. All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English at the level expected for postgraduate study in the UK. Work experience in diplomacy, the civil service, NGOs, journalism or related fields can strengthen an application. Each application is assessed on academic merit, references and the proposed fit between the applicant’s interests and departmental expertise.
