What you'll study

This NMC-approved undergraduate programme combines biological and social sciences with professional nursing practice. Core study areas include child growth and development, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology for children, assessment and clinical decision-making, safeguarding and child protection, family-centred care, mental health in childhood, and public health approaches to child wellbeing.

The course is structured over three years with increasing levels of clinical responsibility. Year one typically introduces foundational sciences, communication and professional values alongside supervised practice placements to develop basic nursing skills. In year two you build clinical assessment, care planning and medicines management skills, and experience a wider range of clinical settings (acute paediatrics, community nursing, neonatal and long-term conditions). The final year focuses on complex care, leadership, research and preparing for transition to registered practitioner, including consolidation placements to meet professional standards.

Practice learning is an integral part of the programme and takes place across a mix of hospital wards, community teams, specialist childrens services and outreach settings. Learning methods include lectures, seminars, skills laboratories and simulation, interprofessional education activities, reflective practice and assessed clinical portfolios.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent, and will normally have studied biology or another science at Level 3, or a health-related BTEC. Typical offers for undergraduate nursing programmes are in a moderate A-level/BTEC range; equivalence and Access to Higher Education diplomas are considered. GCSEs (or equivalents) in English and Maths at a pass standard (for example grade C/4 or equivalent) are usually required.

All applicants must satisfy occupational health requirements and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before starting placements. The selection process commonly includes an application form, a structured interview or assessment day, and evidence of suitability to practise, which may include practical numeracy/English checks and references.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify to apply for registration as a Childrens Nurse and typically begin careers in NHS paediatric wards, neonatal units, community childrens nursing teams, outpatient and emergency departments, and specialist services for long-term conditions. Career development pathways include advanced clinical practice, nurse prescribing (with further training), research, policy roles, education and leadership positions within health services and charities. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in areas such as paediatric advanced practice, public health, child protection or health service management.
