This programme combines physical geography and geology across an integrated masters structure, building from foundational topics to advanced, research-led modules. Early stages cover core principles such as geomorphology, climatology, surface processes, introduction to Earth materials, stratigraphy and basic field skills. Laboratory and quantitative skills are introduced through sediment analysis, mineralogy and introductory geochemistry, plus training in GIS and remote sensing.
In later stages you study advanced subjects including structural geology and field mapping, sedimentary systems, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, hydrogeology, applied geochemistry and Quaternary environmental change. Research methods, statistics for earth sciences and numerical techniques underpin the degree, and you have opportunities to take optional modules in topics such as climate change impacts, soils and biogeochemistry, natural hazards, and environmental management.
A key feature is intensive field training: day trips to local sites and at least one residential field course within the UK or abroad, where you practise mapping, logging and sample collection. Applicants are normally expected to have strong qualifications in science subjects.
